Huerfano/Las Animas Housing Resources is a private, non-profit agency with a HUD certification as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO). A CHDO is a community-based service organization that has the capacity to develop affordable housing for the community it serves. Our area of service covers Huerfano and Las Animas Counties in southern Colorado.
Our mission is to provide decent, affordable rental and homeowner properties for the low to moderate income residents of the bi-county region. We also provide a variety of housing services including Down Payment Assistance, Energy Audits and Ratings, and Foreclosure Prevention Counseling.
In 2005 a Housing Needs Assessment was performed in the bi-county region. Since the hiring of the Executive Director in 2006, HLHR has worked diligently toward meeting the goals set out in the Assessment. A copy of the Housing Needs Assessment can be viewed here.
According to HUD Regulations a CHDO must have at least one third of its Board as low to moderate income persons or representatives of low to moderate income persons, no more than one third may be elected officials, and the remaining third may represent the business community.
